Lamin
Lamin
Jassey has been involved in running music workshops for all ages throughout
Europe for more than ten years, mainly in local community centres, school
and mainstream ed ucational centres as well as private groups. Indeed many
of his pupils have gone on to become performers and
teachers in there own right. He has featured at events such as the Bradford Festival, Womad, Glastonbury, Breeze, Talkin' Reality, Soundjata Promotions and was a guest workshop leader on our last music maker program "Africa for All".
Lamin and Tamala - African Salsa
Tamala featuring Lamin Jassey is an 8 piece band comprising musicians from different parts of the world, and fronted by the Senegambian born vocalist, master drummer and guitarist Lamin Jassey.
Lamin was born into a family of traditional healers and over his 25 year career has performed with various groups from Senegambia and Mali including the famous Lfangbondi, and groups in Britain such as his African Reggae band, "Lamin & African Roots". Tamala are a spirited, high-energy dance band using African and Latin percussion, guitar and violins.
The band uses original materials combining Latin, funk and African styles. The line up is led by Lamin's distinctive soaring voice. He is composer and arranger of Tamala's music and the richness of the influences (Mbalax, reggae, soca, Cuban salsa, highlife) are a direct reflection of his own personal diverse musical experience. Lamin and African Roots are a multi-cultural band, made up of professional musicians. They combine a variety of influences, to produce an exiting and uplifting African Reggae sound - where a solid beat is spiced up with high energy percussion interludes. Infectious melodies and conscious lyrics are enforced through pulsing bass lines, creating a heady cocktail of dance rhythms.
Lamin
and African Roots have been together for over 6 years, during which time they
have played regularly, at venues in and around Leeds, as well as a number
of places nationwide, including the World Music Stage at Glastonbury '98.
